Signs of Autism in Older Children
Many women with autism become particularly skilled at camouflaging, to a far greater degree than other people . But camouflaging is linked to mental health issues—including depression, anxiety, and suicidality—and the degree to which women camouflage is closely linked to their mental health. Another reason why diagnoses of autism have risen in Britain and elsewhere is because the closure of institutions for ‘mentally retarded’ children led parents to campaign for better diagnosis and recognition of their children’s problems. This led to a growth in new behavioural treatment methods as well as a massive backlash against psychoanalytic styles of reasoning.

It’s important to understand that these treatments don’t aim to cure ASD. Instead, they help you address issues such as anxiety, rigid thinking, or depression.
They may talk to you about how you interact with other people, if you have any repetitive behaviors, what your interests are, and if you struggle with anything. This expert may give your child a formal developmental evaluation. During this, a doctor may give your child another test, ask you questions, or have you finish a questionnaire to better understand your child’s strengths and areas they have trouble in. The results will help your doctor figure out if your child has a developmental condition. Doctors will usually look at a child’s development and behavior through time to officially diagnose them. Some can hold a job, and others find that really hard to do. But even for someone on the spectrum who can do a lot, the commonality among those diagnosed with ASD is underdeveloped social skills.
Cyril Burt and other educational psychologists in the 1940s also debated how to attribute mental activity and thoughts to infants, clashing dramatically with behaviourists such as J. B. Watson who argued that it was not the vocation of psychologists to describe the thoughts that they imagined infants to have (Watson, 1925; Burt, 1941).
